Sheffield, South Yorkshire-30th May 2009
Location of Sighting: Sheffield, South Yorkshire. U.K.
Date of Sighting: 30th May 2009
Time: 10.30 p.m.
Witness Name: Geraldine M.
Witness Statement: On Saturday night we had been for a meal on Abbeydale Road and left sometime after 10 o clock. I didn’t take notice of the exact time. There were four of us including a college lecturer and a G.P. As we crossed the road to get a taxi into town we saw a series of orange glowing lights coming towards us from the centre of town.
At first we thought they were some kind of lanterns but as they got closer they were far too big and bright and as it was a warm still night – they were travelling at a very fast speed – far too quckly to be winddriven.
We were greatly puzzled as we watched them veer off in a curve and disappear. It was a bit spooky because they seemed to ‘know’ where they were going and were very controlled however that was nothing to what we saw next.
We flagged down a taxi and got in and as the taxi set off I turn around and looked out the back window of the taxi and almost screamed as I saw about eight or ten glowing lights had gathered in formation like a constellation. We’d never seen anything like it. We turned up into Nether Edge and still shone – the formation may have changed but that could have been the position of the taxi turning but nevertheless they hung in the sky in full control of their position.
I know it sounds a bit wimpish but we hurried in doors because hardly anyone was about (everyone was watching Britain’s Got Talent!) and whatever those glowing orange globes were they weren’t Chinese Lanterns. We just don’t know what they were. They were flying – they objects and we couldn’t idenify them. And we found them a bit scary. If anyone knows of anything happening in Sheffield that night that could explain them we’d be more than happy to hear from you.

I saw the same things…. you were not seeing lanterns.
They were UFOs 1000%.
I have sighted UFOs twice in the past 5 years in Sheffield.
once over Castle Dyke playing fields and once from Millhouses/Abbeydale
believe it! We are not alone///!

I am glad to hear that from you. In fact,I saw the same thing in Crookes when I came out from my flat for a fag on that day,30 of May, but I just wasn’t convinced by what I’d seen earlier. A month on, your posting does confirm the fact that I am not the only one who saw them. Great experience! Many thanks!

26/6/09 22:25 Over Ravenfield Rotherham, whilst sat in the back garden we saw what at first we thought was a plane on fire, a bright orange ball in the sky. As there are fields all around we thought it was attempting an emergency landing but it then stopped in mid air danced left then right and then left again before disappearing towards Sheffield at tremendous speed. Was this a UFO? at first we thought if not a plane could it be SY99 the Police helicopter which flys over regularly with it’s spotlight on however this usually flys that low that you can hear it minutes before it appears, the object we saw made no noise whatsoever, phoned family in Kimberworth straight away but they didn’t see any thing at all, plus it went that fast away from the area that there is no chance it could be a helicopter. As with above story it’s actions seemed very controlled and deliberate. Very freaky and very unnerving, any ideas anyone?

In the early hours of sunday 5th july around 12.30am i was watching tv and looking out of my front window at my home in stannington sheffield when i noticed two orange lights coming up from ground level over the rivelin valley at first i thought it was fireworks such as a roman candle but then the lights rose above trees which were in my view and changed from a diagonal direction to horizontal at first i thought they were two solitary lights but then realised that they belonged to an object.I too thought that it could have been a plane in distress as it waved in the sky towards stannington,it then moved across into my full view and as it grew closer i could see the outline of a dark saucer shape in the night sky joining the lights together after about a minute the lights suddenly faded and the object dissapeared.
My brother in law who lives at walkley saw a bright orange light at about 12 oclock coming over from the city centre area he too thought it was a plane on fire.Neither of us knew about our sightings until we spoke this morning 5th July did anyone else see anything i think the object my have landed in the rivelin valley.

We live in the Sheffield 12 area and were sitting in the garden at about 10/10.30ish pm on Sunday evening 5th July.
A bright orange light came over the sky towards us in a straight line from Base Green area, as it got closer we could not see the light just a dark object travelling silently across the sky. A second one came along about 5 mins later and by this time my husband had got his binoculas. The object flying was a dark, rotating, oblong boxed, like shape – sounds bizzare,I know. In all 4 of these things flew silently across the sky, starting as a bright light in the distance, the light not being visible as they got closer to us, just this odd dark shape, that was absolutely silent. All 4 came from and went in the same direction. And no, we were not drunk. We did get one on video but by this time it was getting dark and the bright light only is visible.

I saw this last night at about 11pm above abbeydale road!
there was around 10 glowing lights i would describe as 10 football sized suns, definatly not a helicopter or anything. I had the feeling they could see us. Me and a friend were driving down the road towards town saw it and stopped, got out of the car, looked up, two of them appeared to come towards us, was scary! i would love to know what they were.

Hi guys you are not alone…I too saw these orange pulsating lights on the 24th of July 2009 from a high rised block in broomhall…I know it sounds a bit sad, but i was watching big brother at about between 10 and 11 the interview with the chinese guy kenny…when i caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye at what seemed to be 3 orange pulsating spheres in the formation of a triangle but each sphere changing position sort of a rotating triangle not sure wheteher it was clock wise or anti clock wise was in a bit of shock to see what i saw. at first i thought it might of been something to do with the police helicopter that was out about half an hour earlier but the helicopter was flying around the hilsbourough direction and long gone (i know what a police helicopter looks like and we see and hear it enough to know the distinction). these were certainly no police helicopters they made no sound whatsoever and were coming from ecallsall direction rising from the hills behind towards the centre of town the vering off into a norfolk park direction before disappearing. It was extremley weird because about 5/6 seconds later more and more appeared and manouevering in a similar fashion to ones describe above i.e. very controlled and deliberate moving in any direction with great ease. I also knew it wasnt a plane because during the point at which there were several of these objects in the sky i could see a plane flying directly over the orange lights at a much greater altitude and anyway you can easily tell what a plane looks like at night beacause its wings flash alternately red/white/ and blue. these objects looked like street lamps rising from the hills into the sky but a different kind of orange even as I write now i get a few goose pimples on my arm and a little shiver up my spine. I have always believed in Ufo’s and stuff and experienced sightings of ufo’s before but nothing as clear and blatently obvious as this. However, I do maintain an open mind to other explanations i.e. military craft and stuff but, something tells me these wernt military. I havent got the slightest idea. I want to see them again. and by the sounds of it there are regular occurances so i will keep my eyes open and try and fillm some.

hi guys, saw those orange orbs lastnite…and came to the conclusion it is a kind of hoax…saw multiple orange lights again…different direction but after doing abit of research i beleive they are indeed chinese lanterns. however, it was raining last night…which does question how the flame remained alight and the paper the lanterns are made from didt weigh down the lanterns but hey…it has to be a hoax…will keep look out again ang get binoculars for a close up…but i am very skeptical that these are genuine UFO’s.

Maybe you could have a point they could be chinese lanterns and part of a hoax but just look at this website and you’ll find so many sightings all over Britain of the same things i was on holiday in Scarborough the other week and saw something very similar as i did in Shefield earlier in the month,i didn’t see the lights on sunday night but know people who did it was far too wet to even get chinese lanterns to fly and it must be a very expensive and organised hoax to create so many sightings on so many occassions.

Hi All,
Saw simular thing last night. There was around 30 orange lights in waves of 3,5,8 lasting arund 20 minutes. we live in Dore, the lights were heading east over Totley,Bradway area. Can anyone explain.
August 17th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Saw the lights on Saturday 15th August. I live in S6 – the object looked like a flikering fire in the sky – like a candle appears from a distance. based on this i thought it may be the fire from an air balloon, but it was moving too fast. then i thought perhaps an airoplane on fire. the object flew south towards me, then arced and headed east until i couldnt see it anymore. about 10 minutes later two more flying pretty close together do exactly the same thing. would love to know what these things were.

i have just seen the red glowing light turn into a much bigger firey orange ball
it seemed to float along, yes like a chinese lantern. As i sat and watched these red lights went out and when I was looking in the sky for it a much bigger burning orange ball was lighting up the sky.
Myself and my husband seen this back in may and never did find out what is was.
this sighting was 21-30 hours, and it was on its own

Andrea, I saw the orange light last night as well, and you are right – it looked like a Chinese Lantern floating along, because that’s exactly what it was. Type “Balloon Lanterns” into Google and see what comes up. I found a website selling 10 for £46. Great for parties! But a bit disappointing to have found the answer……

Early this morning I saw a bright orange light traveling at speed North to South. 00.10am. It was too fast to be a lantern and too large. There was no noise and it kept a straight course. My wife and I at first thought it was the police helicopter but the lack of noise and the fact the light did not change in density as it went past suggest the light was spherical and something else. We did wonder it if it was a plane on fire but there where no smoke trails which would have been clearly visible as the sky was relatively bright with the moons light.
Did anyone else see this?

oh my gosh, i’m so glad i’m not the only person to have seen this!! Last night around 8.30 i was in my back harden, just off Abbeydale Road, and saw the same thing, just one – a large bright orange object flying in a straight line, north to south – lower than a plane would fly over my area, and it wasn’t flashing like a plane, but it was travelling quite fast and it made absolutely no noise! Having had a look at those balloon lanterns, maybe that’s what it was.. it’s just the way it was flying in such a straight line and how high up it seemed, and it’s size. I wanted a rational explination, but it’s a bit of an anti-climax.. =)

Hi there,
God am I glad to read some of the accounts here: Sounds just like what I saw!! I actually live off Abbeydale Road in Sheffield. Now, I’ll be honest, I am quite sceptical by nature especially when UFO’s, the paranormal and the like are mentioned.
I’ve actually found your site whilst trying to see if
anyone else witnessed what I saw in the early hours of
yesterday, Sunday September 20th.
At approximately 3:15 am, I was about to shut the window
that I leave open in our office, so had pulled the blind up when something caught my eye.
In the sky, was what I initially thought was a reflection of
a street lamp or a car headlight, but as I stared I realised it was nothing of the sort.
My initial suggestions discounted, it appeared as if an
airplane was on fire, if that makes sense, but there was no noise, nothing at all. It was an amazing fireball, as daft as that may seem.
No debris seemed to be falling from it and I watched this
fireball for a good 2 or 3 minutes as it headed towards
Chesterfield.
Now, I’m no expert, but I’ve seen shooting stars,
eclipses, comet showers, Chinese lanterns and sun dogs and we live under a flightpath so I’m used to air traffic.
I know planets can sometimes appear extremely bright in the sky, but this thing was really traveling.
It was such an amazing sight, a single ball of flame simply streaking through the sky.
I know this wasn’t a Chinese Lantern, unless they make Zeppelin sized ones now.
This had no characteristics of anything I’ve ever seen
in the sky before.
I’ve checked the internet today, looking round for
other people or stories about it and can find nothing, but I am 100% sure of what I saw. I was so shocked, I rang the BBC
to see if they’d ask any other listeners if they’d seen it but they seemed quite sceptical but I know what I saw.
best regards
Paul

Tonight at about 12pm me and my housemates were outside having a fag and started to see these bright orange, red ligts fly across the sky..they were not planes because they werent flashing and just stayed red and orange and you could make out like an L shape. there was over 20 of them coming from over the trees on harland road of ecci road. then they would stop and just disappear. really weird…iam assuming they are UFOs.

hi all i was on my way home from Greenhill to Woodhouse when i noticed this bright orange round ball thing traveling through the sky, it was about 21:15 as i’d just left the TA center, i thought i was seening things, so i made my partner stop the car and look, as we stopped another one appeared, they were too big to be Chinese lanterns, after about 10 mins of watching them i noticed 4 military air crafts going in the same direction as the orange balls, the balls just vanished.
i’m glad i’m not the only one thats seen these, i’m hoping to see them again as next time i will video them lol
cheers Sarah

Just come on net t see if anyone else had seen what me and the wife saw last Thursday night (8th oct)at about 7.30ish. Driving home to Parson Cross after shopping, we saw 2 bright orange glowing round lights in the sky probably a few hundred feet in the air. They were both hovering a short distance apart(maybe 50 meters). At first we thought they must be helicopters! As we got closer I stopped the car, turned off the engine and radio and opened the window to get a better look. They seemed to make no sound (and as we were almost underneath them we would have heard something)and were definately not helicopters. They just hovered there for a couple of minutes and then slowly moved towards shiregreen keeping the same distance from each other. As we were only round the corner from where we live I started the car and got home to get some binocculars but when we got home they had gone out of sight. I have no explanation???
