Southern Sky: Leicester-21st June 2009
Location of Sighting: Southern Sky: Leicester U.K.
Date of Sighting: 21 June 2009, Sunday Morning
Time: about 1.40 a.m.
Witness Name: Laurence Breedon
Witness Statement: I saw a formation of star-sized lights moving in formation west to east across the southern sky – long enough for me to get my binoculars and ascertain it was not a plane with wing/ tail lights & co. but collectively about double the size, that is six or more separate star-like lights taxi-ing steadily across the sky between a patch of nearby trees and a rooftop of the adjoining house. A few seconds later two simliar globes swept out in a loop across the sky apparently following the formation. The star-like objects were not the colour of stars but red to orange if my memory serves. The formation was symmetrical and , I think, a regular square shape with a ’star’ top left and bottom right of the square. I was going to get my camcorder but would have missed the display if it had, since it took place in a relatively small area of sky between the trees and the rooftops. I have no idea what it was, but I do see planes regularly flying from that direction, which I think is that of Stoughton aerodrome. But this wasn’t a plane; I’ve no idea what it was. Please comment. I guess someone else must have seen it since it was Saturday night/Sunday morning. I’m totally mystified.

Hi Laurence. I filmed the objects I saw and made a slightly tongue in cheek video which can be seen here….

It was the same evening that you mention and it was about 2am. Most people that have seen the video say they are “wedding ballons”. Apparently there was something similar sighted a while back. I still dont believe they were balloons as their movement was too animated to be balloons. They seemed to move in formation for a while, stop, and then move on and out of sight. Who knows?

Dear Bill,
Very many thanks for contacting me. I’ve watched your film and, Yes, that looks like the thing I saw alright. What is this suggestion about ‘wedding balloons’; what exactly are they? This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this so I’m really interested in any feasible explanation. I don’t like such a thing to just remain unexplained and uninvestigated. Many thanks anyway for taking the time.
Laurence

Hi – Sorry to burst your balloon as it were but that is actually what they were! They are called sky lanterns and are basically large paper balloons with a fuel pack underneath which you light and the hot air in them sends them skywards. We were having a birthday party that night and let a number of them off at around that time. The air was very still that evening so they did just drift for a time without moving very fast at all. They really do look like UFO’s if you didn’t know – Check out You Tube and you will see more examples. We also set off some Saturday just gone so maybe there will be more sightings coming through
