Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne-8th August 2009
Location of Sighting: Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne
Date of Sighting: 8th August 2009
Time: 23.15
Witness Name: Steve
Witness Statement: From around 10.30pm to now 11.15 my wife and I saw about 30 orange lights coming from the west travelling due east. They were not all together, 2 or 3 at a time, one or two were red or yellow but mainly orange. They appeared to be round with a distinct red outline when viewed through binoculars but oblong shaped when viewed at full zoom through my camcorder. Very strange. My wife wants me to phone the police!

I too saw these from my house in Gosforth, and were witnessed by by wife. I counted 16 of them. As you state they travelled in a straight line constantly climbing from west to east

I saw something very similar on 1st August 2009.
I counted around 30 orange orbs moving in formation of two’s or three’s and travelling west to east. I live in Consett and they seemed to be travelling from over Weardale and the Moorlands out there in the direction of Newcastle.

Unfortunately I believe these were just chinese lanterns. I’d never heard of them until reading this site then looking on you tube for some clips.

I think that it is getting impossible to discern anything from moving orange lights because at this time of year there really are now thousands of these lanterns being released in to the UK sky and they can look impressive. If they stop and hover for quite a length of time, or shoot off at a very high speed then worth checking but otherwise it is just quite probably lanterns.

Having being mocked by work collegues following the same sightings as other in Gosforth, one member of staff advised her son had been at a party on Northumberland Gardens where they had let off 20 or so Chinese Lanterns that drifted down towards the Hight St. I have spoken direct to people who have attended the party and can confirm that there were no UFOs in Gosforth that night!

I am a police officer working that particular evening and confirmn that the police helicopter, india 99, was returning to base when someone rang and reported these sightings and the chopper crew confirmed these were chinese lanterns, we were all upset at this confirmation as after we received several calls we thought that it could be ufo’s.

Me and my husband and a friend observed a orange flame like thing moving in the sky Thursday 1st of April 2010 at 9.15 we watched it for about 15mins until it vanished we were at a house on Elgy Rd Gosforth, it was fasinating to observe and my husband is ex RAF and he said it was not plane because of the way it was moving and there was no noise atall also there was a strong smell of sulphur in the air, we dont know what it was but it was curious to watch such a thing. it makes you think ?

Interesting, this is the first sighting on here to mention a smell. Of course could be from any source but a smell of Sulphur was noted by some witnesses of the light phenomena at Hessdalen, Norway.
