Orange Light Sightings-September 2009-Volume 5
Each month we receive a large number of eye witness accounts of sightings of single and multiple orange light formations. In many cases it is evident that the most likely explanation would be Chinese Lanterns released in the local area.Due to time constraints a point has been reached where we need to decide whether to completely disregard these types of sightings or not. As a result it has been decided to set up on trial basis this dedicated section to log those eye witness accounts which are considered to be high probability "Chinese Lantern" sightings based on the information provided.
Any such sightings received through the "Submit Sighting Form" will initially be posted as a comment in this section. If at a later date supporting information comes to light suggesting the sightings may not be chinese lanterns then the eye witness account will be reposted as a sighting report under it's county area.
The "Orange Light Sightings" will be published in Volumes of about 20 eye witness accounts.
We hope you enjoy reading the many graphic accounts submitted.

Location of Sighting: Northumberland (8 miles outside Hexham)
Date of Sighting: 18 September 2009
Time: 7.30 p.m.
Witness Name: Linsay
Witness Statement: Travelling home from Blaydon through Stocksfield I looked over the valley to Hexham and saw about 6 large orange balls of light high in the sky. They did not appear to be moving at any great speed but they were in the distance and I was in the car so I couldn’t really tell. I rushed home and told my husband straight away to come out and look but from our drive we could not see the ones over the valley. Then in front of us on the horizon we saw about 5 or 6 more come into view really bright, travel east to some height and then dissappear. Unfortunately I have no experience of chinese lanterns so I can’t rule these out. All I know is the orange lights were very large (the ones that later came into view would have been about 20-30 miles away, very bright orange and silent. I would love to know if anyone saw them and can tell me what they were as they were fascinating.

Time: Between 8pm-9pm
Witness Name: Ben R
Witness Statement: I was walking my Nana’s dog and facing south when a bright orange light like a ball of fire emerged travelling quickly form East to West. It caused me to stop in my tracks and I shouted the neighbours to come and witness it too. By this time it had stopped in one place and seemed to hover there for a few minutes while we debated what it could be. Some agreed it was bizarre but others shrugged it off however none of them saw the objects dramatic and slightly frighteneing approach. The light eventually faded out whilst flickering. I tried to think logically and my only explanation could be that it was the after burners of a fighter jet however there was no sound at all and the way it stayed still seemed not to fit.

Witness Statement: I was out for my evening walk along the Downs near Saltdean. I arrived at the point where the gravel road reaches the point where it meets the road to Telscombe Village and was standing at the grass-bank there.
I looked out a saw a brilliant point of orange light, like a flame, hovering quite a distance of, perhaps above East Peacehaven. It looked like it may have had a slight tail or arc following it. I reached for my phone to photograph it, but it had vanished by the time I looked up. I waited for 5-10 minutes but it did not reapeare.

Location of Sighting: Upminster, Essex
Date of Sighting: 22/9/09
Time: 23:30 approx
Witness Name: Ben & Jon
Witness Statement: Sat outside in the garden and saw a single ball of orange light traveling across the sky from roughly west to east in a perfectly straight line emitting no noise at all. Followed it for about two minutes until it disappeared into the distance. It must have been below cloud level (whatever that was at the time) as about 10 minutes later we heard a plane fly over and no lights were visible therefore the plane must have been above the cloud layer. Difficult to estimate speed but took no longer than 2 minutes to travel across the area of sky visible from where we were.

saw a orangey/reddy light flying silently, i am in lacey atm, it made no sound, and was quite low. The path it was taking would fly over to amsterdam. It doesn’t seem to be a plane and was flying to fast to be a latern. It was going in a very straight line.

I have just witnessed a succesion of orange lights flying over Woodford, Essex. I live on Snakes Lane and witnessed a number of other people and kids staring up at the objects. So I have know doubt that there will be a large number of people reporting the event. Is there a rational explanation for this? I witnessed the lights between 20:48 – 21:06 Saturday 26th September and saw about 20 in total. It is a very clear night, the stars are visible and I could also see aeroplanes with their flashing beacons and these orange lights were definately not from aeroplanes. Chinese lanterns sounds feesible, if they are lanterns then they are likely to be sent up by hoaxers in Epping Forest. I did try to film one on my mobile. The picture quality is poor but I had to try and record them. I zoomed in on one of the objects and all you can see is a pixelated square blob changing through a range of colours. I tend to think the changing colours are due to the poor quality but I am no video expert.

hi saw bright orange/red fireball in sky over Shropshire last night (26-09-09) at between 9pm and 10pm appeared to be falling
in a vertical line extremely bright over Shropshire happened very quickly just wondered if anyone else saw this.
September 27th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
What my partner and I saw was a single orange light. It was about the height of an aeroplane reaching cruising altitude or decreasing altitude to land. We can always see aeroplanes from the location we were at so are familiar with what the usually look like with their white and red lights. This light was defintely orange. We were looking south. It moved west at the speed of a high altitude plane. Then it seemed to turn east and it’s altitude decreased and it seemed to come towards us, getting brighter then diminishing, changing from being orange to red and then diminished completely to nothing. At first I thought it was a plane on fire. It became clear that it was not a plane on fire or a plane not on fire.

CRANAGE, near Crewe, Cheshire: My husband saw a series of steady orange lights “flying” in the sky on Sunday the 20th of September just before 9pm. They traveled in a South to North direction. First, one alone, then three together followed by another two separately. He mentioned that there was no sound as they passed directly over our home at a much lower level than a normal aircraft. Also, the light was constant & not flashing as with aircraft. He mentioned it to me but I did not see them myself. However, at the same time the following Sunday, the 27th of September, he & I both saw them again. This time they were traveling from the East but making a distinctive 90% turn to head in a Northernly direction just before passing over our home. This time the orbs were in single file within equidistance of eachother & traveling much slower than normal aircraft. Again, there was absolutely NO sound. The orange glow was as bright heading towards us as it was heading away. There were a couple of definite aeroplanes in the sky at the same time, at higher altitudes, traveling at faster speeds & all with their flashing lights. As we live under one of the flight patterns for Manchester Airport, we have regular aircraft sightings & as we both work in the airline industry, we can certainly recognize the difference between an actual aircraft & an unidentified floating glowing orange orb. We’ll be looking for them again the same time this Sunday….will report back.

It was late at night (around 11pm) when my friend, my son and I witnessed what looked like a ball of flames moving quite slowly in the sky on Thursay 24th September. It was circular and moved slowly in the sky and then literally disappeared.
Has anyone got any pictures? We are very surprised that there seems to have been nothing in the news about all of these sightings.

On the 26th of September about 7:00pm ish I spotted 7 to 10 Orange Lights in the sky just below the brightest star in the Sky justb passing through Hornchurch in Essex, at first I thought I was seeing things but these stayed in formation for about 10 mins before fading into the East…. But I’ve seen these on Many ocassions over the Past 3 to 4 Months, Very strange….

in portsmouth about 8ish at night on the 24th or 25th my girl friend kim called me to say that she could see something. i came out to the kitchen an saw a oval object flying from the west which seemed to be on fire in the sky bout a mile from the ground. it was being followed by a normal sized aircraft displaying its lights .i watched them fly east for a few minutes and the flaming object flames stopped and i saw a largish grey circle shaped drop out of the sky and dissapear with no sound

my partner and i have seen these lights on several occasions sometimes one or two and sometimes three doin different formations most recent sighting tonite approx 21:30 one single bright light managed to get a photo and when i zoom in i can see five bright lights within the light itself so weird not sure what it is.???
October 10th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Just saw 6 orange lights appear one after the other at 20:30pm last light appeared to be the biggest but there was no engine noise. Over Oswestry Heading towards Wrexham(wales). My younger 11 year old brother and Mother also witnessed these lights aswel. These were definitely not Chinese Lanterns as they were well over 10 Thousand feet into the atmosphere.
I am an air cadet and i know for certain aircraft do not stop in mid-air.

hi there, approx 22:00hrs 23rd october 2009, my mate and i observed 3 triangular shaped orange glowing objects, tavelling at approx 10,000ft above bury st edmunds, flying silently in an arrowhead formation before breaking one of the objects broke formation and appeared to do a 90 degree turn against the formationm i mean these things were so fast, i study aircraft and physics and there is nothing on this planet that i have come across that would be able to move like that, i mean “chinese lanterns” do not move as fast if not faster than commercial aircraft and certainly do not move that fast if there is no wind!! they traveles a northernly direction, appearing to be followin a commercial flight moving in formation but in some sort of evasive manouvers, i am very interested in knowin what this is, my friend who is quite a pesimist was shocked and couldnt believe her eyes. if any one has any information that they would be willing to send my email address is steveallen181@googlemail.com. thanx
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
tonight my girlfriend and i were traveling home in the teeside area at approximately 11 pm when i looked into the sky to the south and saw a cluster of 5 bright orange lights travelling in formation. approx 1 min later a further 3 teaveling in a line from south to north at speed appeared. we witnessed a further 6 of these lights appearing seperately at regular intervals flying at speed horizontally before disappearing. they were all silent and were no way any type aircraft that we know of !!!!!!!!!!!!!1

on the 26/9/09,in my back garden,on the northumberland coast between 9 and 10pm i saw exactly what ben and jon described.an orange light traveling across the sky, west to east in a straight line making no noise at all.it was visible long enough for me to summon my wife who witnessed its course and disappearance.it was not a chinese lantern!

Weird this, me and my family were out trick or treating tonight in (Moorside,Oldham) and at about 7.30pm (aprox), we noticed a strange orange light in the sky. We were fascinated by it, and we also noticed an aircraft above the light, wich also appeared to be still, asthough it was trying to figure what the light also was. We stood for aprox 4 minutes and the orange light did NOT move, the aircraft did though, and then the light started to move in the East direction toward the wagon and horses pub (Ripponded Road). The object didn’t make any sort of sound what so ever and me and my nephew were running along the street to see what is was, and were it was going, it was travelling at speed. Then it just dissapeared LITERALLY it was gone!!!!!! we were like what the f***. I just didn’t understand how it could just dissapear, my nephew was really freaked out and quite shaken as he is only eleven and it scared him, i would love to know what it was. It wasn’t too large but it definately wasn’t a plane and that’s a fact. No way.

I was walking to my local shop about 15 minutes ago when I saw a bright orange light in the sky. It looked like it was on fire and it moved rather swiftly. I thought I was seeing things but then i heard people talking about it at the shop. It flew swiftly East across Goldings Road to Rectory Farm in Northampton.
It was fab!
December 25th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
heya it’s christmas day at about 6:15pm we were in my living room and quite a bright orange light came aross in the sky, it was going in a completely straight line and then just kind of faded into the distance. The strange thing was that about 5 minutes later another one came after and it was in the exact same place as the one before and was also going in a straight line. It was definately not a plane or a helicopter because there was no noise it was fairly high but not low. I really would like to know what it was because it was nothing ive ever seen before.
thanks!

Hi.I too saw the weirdest phenomenon I have ever seen. It was between 7.00 and 8.00 pm on Christmas night (25/12/09)at Barnet in North London/Hertfordshire, when I looked out and saw two bright orange balls of light(or orbs)gliding silently across the sky together in a northbound direction. These were followed by four more at intervals as if in a convoy. The bright orange light was emitted in all directions, even when passing out of sight, therefore could not have been related to any type of aircraft, besides, they were silent. After a lapse of about 10 – 15 minutes, ANOTHER FOUR such “orbs” passed in a straight line and going nortwards as before, MAKING TEN in all! Although the sky was clear, I got the impression that they were at about “cloud-height” and could not have been wind-bourne, as the wind was westerly at the time. Anybody else witness this strange event? I can say that the sighting was witnessed by three other members of my family. Geoff C.

My husband and I saw 5 bright red objects travelling on the same course, South to North, then turning East all at the same point. They were in a line but equally spaced apart by some distance. They were very bright solid red and with the naked eye appeared to have a small tail area. This was at approx 8.55pm on 25th December 2009, over Brentwood. We ran outside and were amazed that there was complete silence, no engine noise whatsoever. At 20.59 I managed to capture 2 of the objects on my digital camera, the other 3 were by this time out of sight. I blew up the photo and it is very clear that the objects are a sort of V shape(sideways on), the whole body glowing red. They were travelling too fast and too controlled for ‘Chinese Lanterns’ There’s just no way they could have been Helicopters or any Aircraft that we know of. We are baffled by this and would love to know if anyone else saw the same thing over Brentwood or any other nearby area at this time.So glad I got the clear photo of two of them. What are they? Seem to be lots of sightings but no answers. Please help.

Hi
My family and i saw one orange/red moving light this evening. We are in Oxford it was at 7.30pm. Very strange, no noise, no change of direction heading in a straight line. Just above house roof level. Interesting to know others have witnessed them too at some time , thought we were going mad.
Any ideas of what it could be??
thanks
December 27th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
My sister and I have just seen 3 of the bright orange objects.
This was between 7pm and 8.30pm on the 27th december 2009 in Telford Shropshire.
They all started off very bright before moving across the sky and getting dimmer.
The second light looked like it had something falling of it.
Can anybody help us find out what it is??

Hi Linsay (September 24th, 2009 at 9:12 pm)
What you saw sounds similar to my experience. Over Stocksfield, 8 bright, stable (in a storm) lights. They extinguished as would a light switch (not a lantern), several of us saw for 5 minutes and all agreed they couldnt be lanterns.
I took 2 very odd pix and 1 video – and sent them to the Chronicle with not response.
May 29th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
At around 10.50 my fiance beat on the window to get me come out the front and see what he had witnessed. It was a bright orange ball (which I at first thought was an aeroplane engine on fire) slowly make its way over our heads – he said he had seen it rise up in the sky and shoot forwards in a move unrelated to any kind of aircraft would make. There was absolutely NO noise. We ran through the house to see it descend slowly over Berwick Pond area in Rainham, Essex. Has totally freaked us both out.
I have been trawling the internet for other sightings since and found literally thousands. Come on people WAKE UP – far too many sightings for this to be coincidence. Coincidence is not coincidental – things happen for a reason, Start looking up at the sky and not at the floor.

I was just about to get in my car with friends last night in Finchley when we noticed bright orange lights moving across the sky.
First there were 2 and we watched as they crossed the sky thought nothing of it at first just curious then another 2 came in the same direction and then another 2 and then finally 1 which seemed to be moving faster.
These were not planes as at the same time as we spotted the 2nd wave of 2 a plane which seemed to be flying lower than the lights passed and it was a completely different kind oif light generated plus you had the red and green lights flahing on the plane.
I can only describe the lights as like a hot air balloon with the burner burning but these lights were moving to fast to be hot air balloons as someone has already said i am normally very dubious about things like this but i can not explain or even begin to explain what these could have been.
i have got video footage of these lights on my iphone and will transfer to my pc to see if i can zoom in in to try and establish what they were.
Freaky stuff or what…..
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:21 am
Just to add to my earleir post once these lights had past over head you could dtill see the bright orange light this would not happen with a plane its a bit like a car at night once it has passed you do not see the light.
These lights sort of suddenly got less and less brighter and then just disappeared and to add no noise what so ever.
These were certainly were not chinese lanterns and the reason why is because they were too high, moving to fast and stayed the same distance from each other, the chances of this happening if they were being carried on the wind are millions to one if not more.

Driving along A27 between Portsmouth and Southampton about 11pm on Saturday 14 August when noticed above small round orange lights which seemed very odd as there were a few of them and heading out to sea and seemed lower than planes. Odd really
