Orange Light Sightings-News Years Eve 2009-Volume 1
Each month we receive a large number of eye witness accounts of sightings of single and multiple red and orange light formations in the sky. In many cases it is evident that the most likely explanation would be Chinese Lanterns released in the local area. Due to time constraints a point has been reached where we need to decide whether to completely disregard these types of sightings or not. As a result it has been decided to set up on trial basis this dedicated section to log those eye witness accounts which are considered to be high probability “Chinese Lantern” sightings based on the information provided.Any such sightings received through the “Submit Sighting Form” will initially be posted as a comment in this section. If at a later date supporting information comes to light suggesting the sightings may not be chinese lanterns then the eye witness account will be reposted as a sighting report under it’s county area. The “Orange Light Sightings” are published by month in Volumes of about 40 eye witness accounts.

Date of Sighting: 31st December 2009
Time: 10.15 p.m.
Witness Name: Campbell Wood
Witness Statement: I went to let out one of my dogs at around 10.15 and noticed an orange coloured ball of light approaching from the north. It reminded me of a glass ball filled with orange flame. I called my wife and we watched it for a couple of minutes before it disappeared to the south. Five minutes later I let out the other dog and, amazingly, another similar object was approaching from the same direction. I grabbed my camera and took a pic of it but it was going away by then and only shows as a tiny dot on screen. It wasn’t an aircraft – there were no flashing lights and it was too big to be that high. It wasn’t a helicopter – it was absolutely silent. It must have been powered in some way because there was little wind. It took about two minutes to go over. Just in case you’re wondering, I was quite sober and am very sceptical about UFO sightings. But this was a mystery.

Witness Statement: Whilst outside having a cigarette with a friend we saw a succesion of aproximately 10 red lights, 3 of which flew in a loose formation and then seemed to fade. The others came from a different direction but all either faded or disappeared from view. These were certainly not fireworks, and moved too quickly and in opposite directions for them to be balloons carried on the wind. I would also like to add that I wasnt drunk at that point

Location of Sighting: Jennycliff Bay, Plymouth, Devon
Date of Sighting: 31 December 2009
Time: Midnight
Witness Name: Janis and Brian Greensall
Witness Statement: Last night whilst looking out of the window at midnight (New Years Eve) we saw about 100 lights travelling towards Plymouth Sound, there was no noise and at first we thought it was helicopters as they frequently fly above our home, but after a while there were so many of them and they were completely silent. We went into the garden to have a better look, it was a clear crisp night with a full moon, fireworks were going off in the distance and these yellow lights just flew above our house and out to sea, some just disappeared into thin air. When speaking to my daughter the following morning she said she too had looked into the sky at that time and seen just one of these silent craft. I can see no other explanation for these yellow lights.

Location of Sighting: Stalybridge
Date of Sighting: 31st December 2009
Time: 11:55pm – 12:30am
Witness Name: Simon Shirley
Witness Statement: There were dozens of flame like balls coming over the hill / horizon which would have been Oldham way, beyond Heyrod visibly. They drifted over to what looked like the City Centre of Manchester then just hung in the air before fading away. I watched them keep on coming, a couple came from behind my house which is Millbrook way and a couple also came in from over Mottram way. I honestly thought they were laterns of some kind. The only curious thing was how specific the route was and also how they all ended up at the same location and stopped ‘floating’ and came to a halt in the air after they had made a pretty rapid journey there.

Message New year eve 11:45ish Flintshire area saw a cluster of the orange lights from my window, by midnight they were all over the sky, they were almost evenly apart and in a grid line sort of pattern, there were atleast 30 that we saw. by 00:20 the lights were all gone.
I spoke to more people, 1 couple were traveling back from manchester airport at that time and said they saw 100′s of these strange lights in the sky on the way home.
Then I spoke to another person who was up in mountains at this time and saw about 4/5 in a direct line above each other.
Also spoke to neighbours all (apart from people who didnt look/go outsdie) saw these lights at the same time.
I had seen 2 a while ago in the sky which just suddenly disapeared.
My mother said the night of christmas that she saw a strange red/ornage light outside and said it just suddenly disapeared.
Very strange

It passed overhead when I was at my father’s house in Ribbleton Preston, in fact it was my father who saw it first and he is partially sighted, it was like an orange fireball, silent and moving south west, sort of towards Angelsea, possibly towards Leyland!!! What is it?

Location of sighting: Dartford, kent
Date of sighting: 26th december
Time: approx 18:30
Witness name: Amy and Adam
Witness statement: Standing outside my parents house having a cigarette my wife pointed to a strange orange ball in the sky. It had a flicker to the light, like you would get from a candle moving very quickly towards the Essex area. Then the light appeared to slow down very quickly, almost hovering over a house at the end of the street. We both looked around and compared the light to aeroplanes in the sky at the same time which had the usual red and white flashing light. But the planes were at the usual height with a vapour trail and moving as slowly as a plane moves when viewed from the sky. There was no wind and yet the orange light did’nt move in a straight line the way a plane does. It could not have been a chinese lantern as the light too speed up and slow down as quick as it did was very strange.

At 6.45 on 1.1.10, a huge orange glowing fireball thingy flew towards us from the Coatbridge area, i ran in for camera, came back out, it was stationery and pulsating nearly overhead, tried to get in on camera but is started shrinking as if flying upwards. Got a piccie of a small red dot way up high but on enlarging this orange/red dot, it is very red with a white core. Any body got any ideas what this might be, it was not on initial encounter like a lantern, it was the size of a plane and glowing orange. Can lanterns be the size of planes and pulsate and stop suddenly and then shrink with great spead. Strange eh, has anybody any ideas of what a lantern looks like when extinguishing itself, as it didnt look like no lantern to me. Regards. Margaret.

Date: IstJan 11.45 pm

We saw 6 or 7 Orange orbs, flying (silently)in a definate formation. At one point 2 of the orbs flew off on their own, actually flying very close to one another.
Flying from north to South.I know of at least 20 witnesses at various locations who have the exact same story to tell
Visable for 7-10 minutes. Not Chinese lanterns. They were obviously of considerable mass.

January 5th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
My son and I saw one orange light in sky whilst driving through Potters Bar, 31/12/09 approx 1220 hrs. This light was moving but not to fast, not very high in the sky, but not very low, looked like a sphere type shape, and seemed to have a yellow ball of fire coming from the underneath!!.
Once we drove on to the M25 heading from Potters Bar to South Mimms roundabout, we noticed at the right of us in the sky over Potters Bar, (possibly above the large field), 5 more of these in a formation, then two approached from the right, very spooky. I tried to ignore them and told my son it was possibly something to do with the new year…
Once in to Welwyn Garden City, Herts, we noticed another one in front of us in the sky. Once I parked up at home two more were noticable in the distance. Not seen anything like it before.
I was glad when internet site stated it may be chinese laterns!!!!!????.
January 8th, 2010 at 5:42 am
I also saw a single red/orange light in Welwyn Garden City, Herts around the same time moving slowly, There was 3-4 passange air craft also flying in the sky at the time but they seemed to be much higher up in the sky and further away, using them as referance I couldn see that the red/orange light was lower, near and had none of the normal flashing lights that the other air craft had, From my point of view I could see clearly that the other air craft in the sky had flashing light on the wings, The red/orange light was just a single very large light. I could’nt really tell what shape it but it looked like a ball of light, I watched it for about 10 mins as it moved across the sky and out of my view.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
i saw these lights to about 11:30 over easton maybe a bit later had a few. going in a roughly south direction then at midnight out the front me and about ten mates seen 2 of them goingwest ish weird seen a lot a planes in the sky but not flying so percicely apart also in a straight line not triangle as others have said
January 9th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
these strange lights are lanterns.I have witnessed these glowing lights in the past but on new year many appeared in the night sky. When being freaked out by these lights and getting the video camera out one got closer and closer and landed outside our home so we went out to see what it was .A large 2 foot lantern that has attached a flame that lights the lantern and makes it float in the sky till it burns out.

22nd January 2010
At about 2215, I saw this bright orange light in Derriford. Sat watching tv, and out of the corner of my eye I see this single bright orange light. First thinking that it was a firework or a helicopter, I paid no attention to it. A couple of seconds had pasted and it was still in the sky. Wondering what it was, I headed over to the window. As I tryed to get a better look, it seem to have appered from whitleigh and was heading towards me. This is when I could this shape as circular, it was making no sound.. Before I could think, ( head and get a camera ) it started to move away, heading over to ward the crownhill/ centre of plymouth.
I would say that, from when I saw it to when it desappered behind a few trees, I saw it for about 5 minutes.

Thursday 11thFeb around 9pm,
Location Erskine Scotland
my wife was having a cigarette out at the back door, where she shouted on me to come and see this strange light, the 2 of us stood outside and watched this round glowing red object moving very fast ascross the sky, coming from the north (Balloch)heading west to ayrshire. This object was very low maybe 1000feet high and there was a couple of what looked like sparks falling from this object. This object dimmed as it went further away until it disappeared. I believe that there is a logical answer to this but for the life of me i cant think of one.
July 1st, 2010 at 6:26 pm
They are not chinese lanterns last friday i was on my way to pick my daughter up, in erskine near glasow when i spotted to orange orbs, and i was heading straight for them, one was really high but the other was really low i stopped my car and the low one which was passing me stopped as i stopped and hovered right over my car. i sat and just staired at it. it was bright orange with two flashing lights in the centre, and as i started to drive away this thing starded moving again very slowly the way it was going in the first place. A week later and im still in awe..
July 7th, 2010 at 7:37 am
I dont think any of these posts are chinese lanterns, if they are then are the lanterns the size of hot air baloons? as the objects i saw were too high for helicopters but were very large in size so I know these werent chinese lanterns, it may be worth asking the distance / height of the objects and size so you can establish which to disregard or not??
