Springhead, Oldham-6th January 2010
Location of Sighting: Springhead oldham
Date of Sighting: 6/1/09
Time: 8.20pm
Witness Name: Rory
Witness Statement: I saw a bright orange ball very low in the sky and at first thought it was a plane on fire as there was a dark slimline shape behind the orange light. The orange craft ball thing then moved at speed over the hills toward manchester. Amazed I alerted my mother, brother, freind & sister. They all saw the ball in the distance as it was easily distinguishable from any airoplane. I then descibed what I had seen and as I did so a very similar bright firey orange object again flew over our heads with no noise and followed the same flight path, The two were roughly 5 mins apart. After waiting half an hour or so and no more sightings we left and took the dog for a walk to lees cemetary where a great view can be seen of the flight path of the orange ball/craft we saw. After giving up hope and just looking at the stars as it was a very clear night we then both saw another orange ball/craft following the same flight path, the time was 9.25pm This time from a different angle and from the side the bright orange light almost looked triangular. We then waited for 15mis waiting for another but it was extremely cold so we left it at theat. I have never seen anything like this before.

They are most likely to be paper lanterns. If you saw somthing similar on the evening of Sunday Jan 3rd – that was us. We live in Moorside. We set one off from our back garden. They only cost £1 – you set fire to a wax parcel and it inflates a paper balloon – in exactly the same way as a hot air balloon. They then drift silently off and can reach surprising heights and distances. They appear orange (or at least ours did) simply because it is opaque white paper with a yellow flame.
A bank (think it might be HSBC) is currently using hundreds of red ones in a TV advertising campaign.
They are becoming increasingly popular, and doubtless UFO sightings will increase as a result.

Following the sighting in Springhead I also saw something very similiar to what you describe in January or February and again this evening. The first sighting I first thought was a plane on fire. I live in Royton, Oldham and the ‘what was thought to be a plane on fire’ was coming along the flight path to manchester airport. As it got closer it became apparent that this was not an aircraft as we know it. It had a orange glow just like fire but an almost triangular glow or shape around it. It then appeared to be getting smaller or hovering but then I realised that the object was going further away but up into the sky (vertically). I watched it until it disappeared, I did try to video the appearance on my mobile but because it was dark you couldn’t see anything. I saw something again very similar this evening, a orange glow coming along the flight path to Manchester, what again looked like a plane on fire in the distance. The orange ball again got smaller and took off high into the sky until I could no longer see it. Very strange…

I’ve just checked my phone and it was the 3/1/2010 when I saw my first sightning and I can assure you this was absolutely not a lantern. The object that I saw was the same size as an aircraft flying at the same altitude as an aircraft, coming along the flight path through Oldham to Manchester airport. It was the same speed as an aircraft..which is why I was convinced it was a plane on fire. Honestly, absolutely not a lantern..I saw the same thing last night although as it began to disappear up into the sky, it was in a different place to the last one that I saw.

we have just seen something very similar go over our house in Taunton Somerset at about 10.05 pm Sunday 25 April 2010, I thought it looked like a plane on fire too, it had no flashing lights like you normally get on a plane. we are still looking to see if anymore appear.

I have seen this ‘plane on fire’ twice now. Considering the numerous sightings up and down the country, I can’t imagine all our eyes are deceiving us. I’ve seen enough planes in my lifetime…..I was genuinely worried the first time, I would have sworn my life it was a plane in distress. Then it disappeared, having made no noise at all. I challenge anyone to find a more credible witness than myself. I rarely drink, have amazing long eye sight, am EXTREMELY skeptical and analytical person. An atheist, don’t believe in ghosts spirit mediums, any of that twaddle, yet I know what I saw and have seen it twice. Lantern my a$$, sorry but it wasn’t.

Did anyone set off some paper lanterns between 10-30 & 11pm on Saturday 28 Aug 2010, near Royton Town centre near Oldham.
Saw several orange balls of light in the sky, no sound was coming from them and all where traveling in the same direction towards the east.
