Sunbury on Thames-6th February 2013
Location of Sighting: Sunbury on Thames
Date of Sighting: 6th Feb 2013
Time: 7:45pm
Witness Name: Matthew Thatcher
Witness Statement: I saw a violet/mauve coloured light travelling at tremendous speed while walking my dog last night. I couldn’t see what shape it was, possibly orb like. The night sky was a combination of very clear and patchy cloud. I only saw this for around 4-5 seconds as I just happened to look upwards towards Orions Belt before it disappeared behind a larger bank of cloud. Did anyone else see this last night?

How far away are you from Heathrow Airport?

Hi,
Could you describe where this light was in relation to Orion’s Belt. If you are familiar with constellations can I check whether you have discounted it being Sirius? I’m mindful that the Human brain is easily tricked because it assumes ‘small objects invariably move against a static background’. So, considering the patchy cloud, it could have been a 5sec glimpse of (static) Sirius, (not uncommonly misidentified and reported on here as a multi-coloured/reddish UFO at this time of year), with patchy clouds racing across the sky and eventually covering it. Rather than perceive correctly the static light and the moving ‘cloudy landscape’, the Human brain in that situation will always assume it is seeing a moving light instead.
If you are an experienced observer (and thus used to this common illusion) and have already discounted mis-identification of Sirius then it’ll be good if you can confirm that’s the case. If so I’ll put my thinking cap on again in order to try and help. Best wishes, Warren

SAW very similar thing on Sunday 17th Feb, approx 3:15-3:30 in the afternoon. Bright object, flying upwards above Sunbury on Thames, into cloud. Too vertical and fast to be a plane and definitely not a bird. MAY have had a triangular shape. Have never seen anything similar and I watch the sky regularly for the Red Kites overhead.
