Barry, South Wales-Between 18th and 20th July 2013

Location of Sighting: Barry, South Wales
Date of Sighting: Between 18th and 20th July 2013
Time: Approx 1am
Witness Name: Ben Woodfield

Witness Statement: I am studying science at uni, it was a clear sky and I was just looking up at the stars from my flat window. I saw a star flickering, looking properly I thought I could see faint red and green. I used a cheap beginners telescope to get a better look, it was shaped like a ring or hoop and one side flashed red and the other simultaneously flashed green. It seemed a fair distance, it also seemed to be moving very slowly across the sky but I think it was still and the earth was moving. Googled it and saw similar reports in America. The space station jas no collision loghts and this Was Not an aircraft it was above the atmosphere.

  1. Hi Ben,
Good observation, but my thought on this is that it may well be a star twinkling as you see it through the atmosphere.
Some stars, (especially if they are fairly close to the horizon) can be easily misidentified as a ‘UFO’
One in particular, Sirius is well known for this and can produce some bright flashing colours. Another clue, (as you mention) being that it is perceived to be only moving at the speed of the revolving Earth! -Paul

  2. Download Stellarium (it’s free), enter your location and the time and date, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to identify what you saw.

  3. Faint red and green are nav lights.
