Bicester Oxfordshire-27th September 2011

Location of Sighting: Bicester Oxfordshire
Date of Sighting: 27 September 2011
Time: 9pm to 12.05am
Witness Name: Sandra Collison

Witness Statement: At 9pm I saw a very bright light low in the sky. I thought it was a chinese lantern as it seemed to be moving. An hour later I went upstairs to see if it was still visible and it was just as bright and had moved upwards and eastwards. I found the binoculars and was amazed to see that it was not just 1 light but about 10 or 12 making up the bright light. It also seemed to be moving around and had 1 light that seemed to be moving around the others. It was difficult to keep the binos still so I had to watch on and off but at one point the bright light that was moving around the others peeled off and dropped very rapidly away to the east and downward. I watched it for a few minutes then went back to the main lights. I did not observe another light drop away but I could only watch on and off until 12.05 when I finally went to bed. By 12.05 the lights had moved in a large arc through 90 degrees. I intend to watch again tonight!

  1. This sounds like a planet to me – if it is, it would certainly have appeared the next night in pretty much the same place. Multiple lights, shimmering, twinkling, colour changing etc are caused by refraction through the earth’s atmosphere and/or the limitations of your binoculars. To check out the position of planets and other celestial bodies, you can download some excellent free software at stellarium.org

  2. I saw something very similar around the same time as you. I am also from Bicester, and the light I saw was near Bicester north train station in the sky. I was in my bedroom and caught a glimpse of a greenish light in the sky, not to high up and fairly close to my house. It was there for a few minutes and then it dropped out of sight. I told a couple of my friends and they’d also seen similar things recently. In Banbury, too. Very unsettling.
