Burgau, Portugal-8-14th October 2011

Location of Sighting: Burgau, Portugal
Date of Sighting: 8-14th October 2011
Time: 7:30pm
Witness Name: J.Ballan

Witness Statement: While on holiday with a friend we saw on several occasions approximately at the same time, strange orange/yellow bright lights in the sky, in the SW direction. The lights didn’t rise or fall. They just appeared, seemed to almost evolve shape in a throbbing type manner. Then after about 5 seconds totally disappear. If this had been a one off, I would have dismissed it. But we witnessed the same thing on several occasions. These were definitely not lanterns. As they did not move. One night at a restaurant I was asking a waiter if he knew anything about this. He said “no” and asked what thry looked like (probably thinking that I was a nut!) Rather spookily they appeared in the sky behind him, so my reply was “like that” this took him back a bit. He said that he had never seen anything like this. I know there is a military radio array in Sagres, which is kind of in this direction. But don’t know how this can explain what we saw? Anyone else see these?

  1. Are these lights out at sea? If so, my guess would be lamps from squid bosts: Sagres is well-known for its seafood incluing squid.

  2. Squid boats is a possibility, if the lights were at sea level; although the lights are left on longer than 5 seconds, and a local waiter would recognise them surely?

  3. Hi There,

No, they were high in the sky and in the westerly direction (the coastline is south). I came accross a video on youtube which shown something very similar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHtpcbTtGsc. Having seen sky lanterns and used them on a few occasions, this can be ruled out as they wouldnt just appear! they would rise and fall. I cant believe we were the only people to see these, unless there is some explination that the locals are aware of?
