Kingston upon Thames-26th September 2013

Location of Sighting: Kingston upon Thames
Date of Sighting: 26th September 2013
Time: 8pm ish
Witness Name: Alex

Witness Statement: My cousin, her husband and I went outside into the balcony for a smoke after dinner. We were looking at the Thames from the balcony. Then I noticed a 2 engine passenger jet heading west. I’m quite interested in planes so I generally look up when I hear one. I could see its lights, and it’s port and starboard lights. There was some cloud but not enough to obscure the plane. Then flying right under it heading north west ish, at a slightly faster speed was a V shape formation of lights. What first struck me was that there was an odd number of lights on each side. On the left there were 4 or 5 and the right 2 or 3. Next thing that struck me was that’s flying flipping close to the passenger jet above. They looked way too close and to begin with were almost on the same course. The lights were white and fairly bright. For the 5 or 6 seconds I saw it, it was very clear before it disappeared with clouds obscuring it. They didn’t seem to be independent, more fixed to something. All I could make out was a dark leading edge. Surely if it was an aircraft all the lights would have been working. Especially in that busy airspace. The 3 of us saw it and weren’t to fussed at the time. But I can’t think of any aircraft that have such a strong V shape with lights dotted along the leading edge of it’s wings.

  1. It’s very difficult to judge vertical separation looking from the ground and especially at night. Given that you’re looking at some of the busiest airspace in the world, any near miss or anomalous traffic can’t possibly have gone unnoticed. The pilot or pilots involved will have to file an airprox report if any near miss did occur.

  2. Hi Alex,
Very interesting and informative report – your’s is one of a number of apparent ‘V’ shaped ‘craft’ with lights at night.
These especially seem to be seen on U.S. skies and I have noticed that they either have a whilte light at each of the 3 corners and often a red light in the middle, – other’s like yours have white lights (usually 3 white on each leading edge), but not always, so some seem to have only 2 on the other side.
All that I can say is that by what you describe, it seemed to be too close for comfort to the passenger jet. Again, as in so many cases, if radar observable, it must have shown up (and/or squalked it’s ident on it’s transponder). Sounds possibly military to me!!
Other contributor’s views may also be interesting re this incident!

These are usually B2 Spirits on approach.

  4. Hi Steve T,

Yes mate, – exactly as you describe!! -Paul

  5. Playing Devil’s Advocate, just because you couldn’t see the lights doesn’t mean they weren’t there.

  6. Whoa Gary, does that mean just because you can`t see an alien does`nt mean they are`nt there?

Absolutely spot on. Elsewhere I described watching Typhoons in the sky out here in an evening. I could neither see lights nor hear sound, but I know exactly what they were.

  8. Alan, how would I know if I’d seen an alien and what is one? Are they all from the same extra-terrestrial tribe? Are you not being alien-racist suggesting such a thing?

  9. This comment, from Gary, raises an interesting point:

“Alan, how would I know if I’d seen an alien and what is one?”

It’s an oft-overlooked problem that is neatly sidestepped by references to entirely fictional images that have become etched in the memory. In truth, we have no idea what an alien would look like. A friend of mine is an advocate of the ‘ancient aliens built the pyramids etc’ theory (which can be easily deconstructed, yet he won’t have it) and postured to me the ‘evidence’ of ‘obviously aliens’ depicted in ancient Hopi wall paintings; when I asked him how he knew they were aliens, given he’d never seen one, he was rather confused. Incidentally, the same guy insisted that Machu Picchu ‘couldn’t have possibly been built by humans thousands of years ago’; when I corrected him, explaining it was built in the 15th century, he was a little perplexed. The moral of the story is, do your research.
