Maerdy, South Wales-late 80’s

Location of Sighting: Maerdy, South Wales
Date of Sighting: late 80’s
Time: approx 9pm
Witness Name: Paul Hemming

Witness Statement: Its taken me years to talk about this. I was in the car with my parents and sister travelling home from my grandparents. We travelled up from Ferndale to head over the mountain back to Aberdare it was about 9pm and it was dark with no clouds in the sky. Like clockwork we made the same journey every Sunday. We dropped down the hill in Maerdy towards the mountain road, at the time the bridge over the river was being strengthened so we had to stop for some temporary traffic lights. Whilst sat there my dad looked out of the driver side window down the valley back towards Ferndale, he said look at those lights, so we all looked and saw what looked to be like two car lights above the mountain they were stationary at first but within a few seconds started to move along the mountain line in our direction. Instantly my dad tried to make sense of it and said that it was probably a helicopter checking cables etc.. With that the lights changed to Green so we headed up the mountain, I heard my mother tell my dad to slow down, he said we might see what ever it was when we got to the top so he kept his foot down. We got to the last right hand bend just before the carpark on the right, there is this small peak there, we pulled over and with that for some reason both my Dad and I without speaking just got out of the car, by now my sister was screaming and my mother was telling us to get back in, we both just stood the in a trance within a few seconds the two lights ascended over the peak and kept moving towards us, there was absolutely no sound at all, the object which I still fail to describe in detail came over the top of us and was travelling west, I can recall looking directly above me and seeing a mass that reminds me of the size of a football pitch! The object passed over us and just dissapeared. We got back in the car and drove home. Still today years later we can all recall that night as though it happened just days ago!

  1. Hi Paul,

    Thank you for coming back.

With regards your comment, “plus what does reporting such things achieve other than attract people looking to shoot your sighting down as being a wind up or some sort of joke”.

The importance of reporting sightings such as yours cannot be underestimated as it brings to light a reality that most people are unaware of, and more importantly, might encourage more people to come forward to report there bizarre sighting, so that we might gain a greater understanding of what is being seen in & around the sky’s all over the world.

Millions of people all over the world believe in some kind of ‘God’, & no ‘proof’ is required by them, it would be easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle, than it would be to shake there faith in what they ‘choose to believe’.

However, with this phenomenon, ‘proof’ is required by the sceptic’s who reside on this site, & dismiss each & every sighting, & there are others whose ‘stance’ is that aliens might be millions of miles away ‘over there’, but can’t possibly be ahead of us in technology because they perceive life can’t have started before ours, or, all sightings are ‘hoaxes’, or sightings are misidentified airplanes, lanterns, Venus, the ISS, & clearly, your sighting is none of the above.

  2. “The question of missing time is speculative, and of no relevance giving the original report: after all, if they were to come back and say ‘oh yes, I forgot to say, we lost an hour’ I for one would be highly suspicious”

You will no doubt remember my sighting of 8th September 2013, Bromley, were you asked me how long my sighting lasted, & it was only on checking the ‘time stamps’ on the camera that I found
a discrepancy of some 45(ish) minutes of ‘missing time’!.

Had you not asked that “very, very poor line of enquiry” question,
I wouldn’t have been aware of the ‘missing time’ scenario!.

I strongly believe all relevant questions to a poster are appropriate, if there is the slightest possibility of gaining any further information on a sighting.

It won’t be a ‘game changer’ finding any further information, but,
humans love & thirst for all the information they can get, don’t you agree?.

  3. Nice to see you back, Paul, and also nice to know there were no after-effects from the sighting. I’m quite sure you did see something, as you sound like a genuine kind of bloke. As to what it was, who knows? Alien? No. Experimental? Probably. You’re not the only one on here who has reported huge silent craft, so I guess there must be something in it.

  4. Chris,

I think you miss my point somewhat; to get things straight, you didn’t experience any missing time, just oddly incorrect time stamps. The problem with introducing a hitherto unmentioned aspect into a sighting such as this is that it serves only to confuse. Surely, after all, had missing time been involved it would have been mentioned in the first place?

  5. “However, with this phenomenon, ‘proof’ is required by the sceptic’s who reside on this site”

Of course it is, otherwise we would be left to assume everything we don’t recognise is unearthly or alien or something. The comparison with religion is so far wide of the mark its off the map.

  6. Hi Gary,

A quick check on Google shows Triangle’s have been seen since the
50’s. I have a hard job to accept that these things are ‘military’
purely for the reason that these triangle have been noted for silence in operation (some mention a humming sound) they travel at walking pace, at extremely low levels, have the ability to travel on there side.

All the above flying characteristic’s are bizarre in the extreme, & when all is said and done, when we think of all the ‘secret’ military craft that have been unveiled to us mere mortals over the decades, what, in your opinion, would be the bona fide reason for keeping triangles ‘secret’ for ever?.

  7. Steve T,

With respect, it’s only your opinion that I didn’t experience ‘missing time’, how odd that the camera’s time stamps
only ‘malfunctioned’ when taking the pictures, never before, nor after!.

With regards Paul’s sighting, that the family took “every Sunday”, though Paul is clear that it was “about 9pm” when they left, there is no mention of an arrival time, so, that’s why no mention is made of ‘missing time’ “in the first place”.

  8. “I have a hard job to accept that these things are ‘military’

Interesting points, but I think it’s about perception. To explain; the Dutch air force do a stunning display at air shows with an F16. Often they open the routine by flying in at just above stall speed, the aircraft at a high rake angle, then throttle upwards for full effect. The F16 looks, in this movement, to be flying very, very slowly – and in its terms it is – and as we are used to seeing fighter jets doing what we expect them to do – going fast – we percieve it as being a lot slower than it actually is. ‘Walking pace’ could be an apt description for the very, very slow approach I watched at Sunderland a couple of years back, but it was actually considerably quicker! try this: get in your car, do 70 down the motorway, and then reduce your speed to 30; you feel like your crawling: perception. I have little doubt, personally, that the majority – note I’m not saying all – of triangle UFO’s have been F117’s, B2’s, and the various development aircraft that led to those machines over the past 50 years.

Your last point is interesting, too: why keep triangles secret? answer – nobody did. They’re out there, flying.

  9. Steve T both the USAF and USSR – Russia both experimented with adjustable jet nozzles on fighter aircraft. The MiG 29 was very impressive moving at walking pace across the sky at a very high angle of attack. This was a worry to MoD as the Tornado would have been no match, only our Harrier could out manoeuvre this new approach to dog fighting.

Your analogy on speed is spot on.

  10. “The MiG 29 was very impressive moving at walking pace across the sky at a very high angle of attack”

I watched a pair of Sukhoi SU27’s do the same at Woodford Air Show one year, and it was perhaps the most impressive display of flying I have ever experienced. It actually made the hairs on my arms stand on end; it’s interesting what you say about the MOD, as we were talking to a pair of Tornado pilots on the day, who expressed the opinion they would have no chance at all against that aircraft in combat. Beautiful to watch (and the tail slides were spectacular!) I think people underestimate what is possible with remarkably large fighter-bombers as these things are, never mind a nimble F16.

  11. “With respect, it’s only your opinion that I didn’t experience ‘missing time’,”

But Chris, it’s not; you told us the experience lasted only a few minutes; your confusion was with the time stamps, not the amount of time you spent in the garden. How does that amount to ‘missing time’ or are you suggesting the aliens wound the clocks in your house back to cover their tracks? If so, why not do the same with the camera? You were in the garden a few minutes, then back in the house – where’s the missing time?
