Oxshott, Surrey-On a Thursday Oct – Mar between 1980 – 1984

Location of Sighting: Oxshott, Surrey
Date of Sighting: On a Thursday Oct – Mar between 1980 – 1984
Time: 21:00 – 22:00
Witness Name: Julian Idle

Witness Statement: I know this is kind of late, but I just had to report it.
One Winter’s Thursday after choir practice, I was walking home from the church. At the time I was between 16 – 18 years old. The sightings occurred at the junction of Waverley Road and Kenilworth Avenue, and again further up Waverley Road, Oxshott. Oxshott lies on the departure flight path of Heathrow. Normally, at that time of evening, there are a number of planes departing and some also arriving from the West. However, at between 21:00 and 22:00 there were no aircraft in the sky! I was walking passed the recreation ground and approaching the junction to Waverley Road when I had the urge to look up. Directly above me, at what I would judge to be 5’000 feet altitude, were three red, pulsating lights, configured at 120 degrees and rotating together in a circle the diameter of an open hand at the distance of an outstretched hand. The lights must have rotated once every 15 seconds. The pulsation would have been between 50 and 100 percent brightness, pulsating from bright to bright at perhaps a 5 second period. They must have rotated at least three times. During this time I felt very calm. There were no cars, pedestrians, dogs barking, or other sounds I could remember. It was deadly quiet – the lights made no noise, either. One by one, the lights ‘peeled’ off and ‘flew’ due South, maintaining the same ‘velocity’ as they had in the ring. The lights disappeared beyond the trees on the horizon. I stood, waiting (wishing) for them to return, maybe for 5 minutes, during which no noise could be heard. I continued walking up Waverley Road, crossing Webster Close. Halfway between Webster Close and Lyfield I had another urge to look up. I stopped and looked up. There was one silent, red, pulsating, stationery light ‘hovering’ above me. It must have held my attention for at least a minute. All at once, it accelerated away at very great speed, again to the South. After this, I again waited around for a while and then continued home. During what I would reckon to be at least 20 minutes, there were no aircraft flying in what could be otherwise described as busy airspace.
I have shared this experience with a few people since, but have never reported it officially – this is the first time. I have since moved overseas to New Zealand.
